The Mac host is a separate free download (Developer ID / Homebrew), not a separate purchase.
Yes. Tap 'Try a demo session' on the welcome screen to explore a simulated terminal and agent — no Mac, no pairing, and no purchase required. It's a local simulation so you can see how Matador feels before you buy.
Pairing performs an X25519 key exchange and your Mac must explicitly approve each device before any command runs. Sessions are sealed with a per-pairing key, so an unapproved device can't issue commands. The QR is the out-of-band trust anchor — scanning the code from your own Mac is what authenticates it.
On the same Wi-Fi, Matador works fully offline over MultipeerConnectivity. Remotely, it uses a direct WebRTC connection with STUN only (no relay) in v1, so roughly 15-20% of restrictive cellular, corporate, or iCloud Private Relay networks can block the direct path. The same-network path always works.
On your Mac, as you. Matador relays your input and the output over the encrypted session — the terminals and agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor) execute locally on your machine. Matador has no servers and makes no cloud LLM calls of its own.
