Apple's checker, plus the slips it misses.
On a Mac, proofreading uses Apple's own spelling and grammar engine; on iPhone and iPad, Apple's spelling checker. Ohms Write adds its own rules on both: their/there, your/you're, its/it's, “could of”, “alot”, “in order to”, repeated words, a/an, sentence capitals and stray spaces before punctuation. Where two fixes overlap, one is chosen before anything is applied, so the text never comes out scrambled. Proofreading opens no network connection, even with a provider key saved.
A diff, not a mystery.
Additions are underlined in green and deletions struck through in red, beside a list of each issue and the reason for it. Nothing reaches your clipboard until you press Copy Corrected, and pasting it is still your move.
It reads only what you hand it.
No keyboard hook, no keyboard extension, no Accessibility permission, no account, no telemetry. The clipboard is read only when you ask: Option-W or Proofread Clipboard on a Mac, the Paste button on iPhone and iPad. What you copy out is saved to a history on the device that you can search, prune row by row, or clear; a run you discard leaves no trace.
Copy text anywhere and press Option-W: the floating panel opens with it loaded, even when the empty panel is already on screen. Opening Ohms Write from Finder or Spotlight shows the panel too, and if another app already owns Option-W, the panel says so and points you to the pencil in the menu bar.
Word count, sentence count, reading time at 200 words a minute and Flesch-Kincaid grade, updating as you type and compared before and after each run.
Proofread works on every supported Mac, iPhone and iPad with no setup. The Executive, Concise, Academic and Friendly tone rewrites need Apple Intelligence (macOS 26 or iOS 26 and later, on a device that supports it) or an API key you add yourself. With neither, the app tells you why instead of running.
A tone rewrite can go to an AI provider you already pay for, straight from your device under your own key, or on a Mac to a model server you run at 127.0.0.1. Before the first send to each provider, Ohms Write names where the text is going, quotes the start of it, and waits for you. Keys stay in the Keychain.
