Privacy policy.
We collect nothing. Proofreading stays on your device; a tone rewrite leaves it only for a provider you chose and approved.
The short version
Silo Systems collects no data from Ohms Write. None.
No analytics. No telemetry. No account. No usage metrics. No crash reports. No advertising identifiers. Ohms Write never contacts a Silo Systems server, because there isn't one.
Proofreading never uses the network. It runs on your Mac, iPhone or iPad, and it stays offline even when a provider key is saved in Settings.
Tone rewrites are the one exception, and only if you set one up. The Executive, Concise, Academic and Friendly modes can run on Apple Intelligence on the device, or on a cloud AI provider whose API key you add yourself. When a cloud provider runs a rewrite, the text in the editor goes from your device straight to that provider. Silo Systems is not a party to that request, runs no proxy and receives no copy. What the provider does with the text is governed by its privacy policy.
What we don't have, and therefore never see
Because Ohms Write has no server of ours behind it, none of the following exists anywhere in our infrastructure: your name, email, phone, or address; your IP address, device identifier, or any hardware fingerprint; your writing and anything derived from it; session timing, feature usage, or behavioural data; crash reports.
What reaches a provider you add
Nothing is sent until you add an API key in Settings and run a tone rewrite with that provider. The first rewrite to each provider stops and asks: it names the provider and the host the text will go to, quotes the start of the text, and sends nothing unless you press Send. Cancel, Esc or closing the panel sends nothing. You are asked once per provider, and removing its key withdraws that permission, so adding the key again asks again.
Each rewrite request then carries:
- The text in the editor.
- The instruction for the tone you picked and the model name, either the default or your override.
- Your API key, which the provider uses to authenticate the request against your account.
Cloud requests go over HTTPS directly from your device to the provider. On a Mac you can instead use a model server you run yourself at 127.0.0.1:11434; that traffic never leaves the machine and needs no confirmation. When the Mac app starts, it makes one check of that local address, with a one-second limit, to see whether such a server is running. iPhone and iPad make no such check.
Where your keys live
API keys are stored in the Keychain on your device, scoped to com.silosystems.ohmswrite. They are never written to preferences or history, and they are never transmitted to Silo Systems; each key goes only to the provider it belongs to. Removing a key in Settings deletes its Keychain item.
Other outbound traffic you initiate
Beyond tone rewrites you set up, the only outbound traffic is started by you, and none of it goes to Silo Systems:
- App Store updates. When Apple ships an Ohms Write update, the App Store delivers it. This traffic is between your device and Apple's servers.
- Links you click. If you open an external link from the app, your default browser handles the request.
- Tone rewrites with your own key (optional). Only after you add your own API key in Settings, and only when a tone rewrite is routed to that provider, the app sends the text in the editor, the mode's instruction, the model name, and your key over HTTPS directly from your device to the provider you configured, along with what any HTTPS request carries, such as your IP address. The provider handles it under its own privacy policy. Proofread never sends anything.
A model server you run yourself is reached only at 127.0.0.1:11434, an address on the same device. The app may check that address at launch and in Settings to see whether a server is running; that check does not leave the device.
Permissions we request, and why
- Clipboard. Read only when you ask: Option-W or Proofread Clipboard on a Mac, the Paste button on iPhone and iPad. Written only when you press Copy Corrected. Never read in the background.
- Outgoing network (optional). Used only for tone rewrites sent to a provider you added a key for, and on a Mac for the local check described above. The app accepts no incoming connections.
Ohms Write asks for no file or folder access, no Accessibility permission, no microphone, and installs no keyboard extension. It works only on text you type or paste into it.
On-device data you create
History. When you press Copy Corrected, Ohms Write saves the original text, the corrected text, the mode, where the result came from, and the date. A run you discard is not saved. The history is one file inside the app's own container: on a Mac, ~/Library/Containers/com.silosystems.ohmswrite/Data/Library/Application Support/com.silosystems.ohmswrite/; on iPhone and iPad, the app's sandbox. You can search it, delete single entries, or clear it all from History.
Preferences. The selected provider, any model overrides you typed, which providers you have allowed to receive text, and a few counters that decide when to show Apple's rating prompt. API keys you add are stored in that device's Keychain.
Deleting the app from an iPhone or iPad removes its sandbox, but Keychain items can remain, so remove keys in Settings first. On a Mac, removing the app may leave its sandbox container and Keychain items in place, so clear History and remove keys first, then use macOS storage controls for anything that remains.
Third-party components
Ohms Write relies on system frameworks that run on your device and receive nothing about you from Ohms Write. The only place outside your device that Ohms Write sends your text is the optional provider you configure for tone rewrites, described above:
- Apple spelling and grammar checking on a Mac, and Apple's spelling checker on iPhone and iPad.
- Apple Intelligence for on-device tone rewrites, where your device supports it.
A cloud AI provider you add is a third party under its own terms. It receives only the rewrite requests described above, and only after you allow them.
Children's privacy
Ohms Write asks nobody for personal data, so the same policy applies at every age: nothing collected. A tone rewrite sent to a provider you add is subject to that provider's own terms, including any age requirements.
Changes
If we ever materially change how Ohms Write handles data, we will publish an updated version of this page, say so in the release notes, and require explicit consent in the app before any new collection begins. This version covers iPhone and iPad as well as the Mac, and the confirmation before a first send to each provider.
